Course description: an exploration of the role of
psychedelic substances throughout history. This
includes their use by indigenous cultures, in
religious contexts, psychotherapy, art and in the
political social context of the sixties. Psychedelic
research may be the field with the greatest gap
between information scholars and scientists have
discovered and what the general public knows.
Objectives:
1) to describe psychedelics? history from
archaeological times to the present
2) to contrast the Western view of
psychedelics/drugs versus indigenous cultures view
3) to describe their implications for
psychotherapy and mental health
4) to identify their role in religion as a
primary religious experience
5) to describe their relationship to human
creativity
